[Veterinary Drug Name]

Generic name: Atropine Sulfate Injection

Trade name: Dafuning

English name: Atropine Sulfate Injection

Pinyin: Liusuan Atuopin Zhusheye

[Main Ingredients] Atropine sulfate

[Description] This drug is of colorless transparent liquid.

[Pharmacological Action] Pharmacodynamics: This drug can compete with acetylcholine for M-cholinergic receptors, thereby blocking the muscarinic effect of acetylcholine and exogenous cholinergic drugs. In addition, a large dose can also block N-cholinergic receptors located in the ganglia and skeletal muscle motor endplates.

The therapeutic dose of atropine has a highly significant relaxing effect on the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract that are excessively contracted or spasmed, followed by its effect on the detrusor of the bladder, and its effect on the smooth muscles of the bronchi and ureters is relatively weak. In addition, it can also relax the iris sphincter and ciliary muscle, resulting in dilated pupils, increased intraocular pressure, and regulatory paralysis. Due to the high sensitivity of salivary glands and sweat glands to atropine, small doses can reduce the secretion of salivary glands, bronchial glands, and sweat glands (excluding horses), while relatively large doses can reduce the secretion of gastric juice. The therapeutic dose of atropine can temporarily slow down heart rate. Relatively large doses of atropine can relieve the inhibition of the vagus on the heart, as well as counteract conduction block and arrhythmia caused by excessive excitation of the vagus. Moreover, a large dose can accelerate heart rate, in order to promote atrioventricular conduction, and can dilate peripheral and visceral blood vessels to relieve small artery spasm, and improve microcirculation.

A large dose of atropine can significantly stimulate the vagus center, respiratory center, motor and sensory areas of the cerebral cortex. Moreover, the toxic dose can cause strong excitement in the brain and spinal cord.

Pharmacokinetics: Atropine is easily absorbed by intramuscular injection. After being absorbed, it quickly distributes throughout the body and can also pass through the placental barrier and blood-brain barrier. Finally, it is metabolized in the liver and excreted through the kidneys, with 30%-50% being excreted in its original form with urine.

[Drug Interactions] (1) Atropine can enhance the effects of thiazide diuretics and adrenergic drugs.

(2) Atropine can exacerbate certain toxic symptoms of amitraz and cause further inhibition of intestinal peristalsis.

[Function and Use] Anticholinergic drug, for the treatment of organophosphate poisoning, pre-anesthesia administration, and antagonism of cholinergic nerve excitation symptoms.

[Dose and Administration] Intramuscular, subcutaneous or intravenous injection: administered before anesthesia, 0.002-0.005 ml/time per 1kg of body weight for horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, dogs, and cats; 0.05-0.1ml/time per 1kg of body weight for horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs to relieve organophosphate poisoning; 0.01-0.015ml/time per 1kg of body weight for dogs and cats; 0.01-0.02ml/time per 1kg of body weight for poultry.

[Adverse Reaction] Side effects of this drug are related to its intended use, and its toxic effects are often caused by excessive dose. During the process of administering medication or treating gastrointestinal diseases before anesthesia, it is easy to cause symptoms such as intestinal distension, rumen distension, and constipation. The symptoms of poisoning in all animals are basically similar, manifested as dry mouth, dilated pupils, fast but weak pulse, excitement and restlessness, and muscle tremors. If severe, symptoms such as coma, shallow breathing, and motor paralysis may occur, and ultimately death may occur due to convulsions, respiratory depression, and suffocation.

[Precautions] (1) It is prohibited for animals suffering from intestinal obstruction and urinary retention.

(2) Symptomatic supportive therapy should be used for poisoning rescue, and drugs such as physostigmine, short acting barbiturates, and chloral hydrate can be used to counteract extreme excitement. Phenothiazine drugs such as chlorpromazine are prohibited from being used for treatment.

[Withdrawal Period] It is not required.
