[Veterinary Drug Name]

Generic name: Sodium Salicylate Injection

Trade name: Boyankang

English name: Sodium Salicylate Injection

Pinyin: Shuiyangsuanna Zhusheye

[Main Ingredients] Sodium salicylate

[Description] This drug is of colorless to faint yellow transparent liquid.

[Pharmacological Action] Pharmacodynamics: Sodium salicylate injection functions as a drug to reduce fever, relieve pain, and combat inflammation. Comparatively, its pain-relieving capacity is less potent than that of aspirin and phenacetin aminopyrine. Predominantly, it serves as a clinical treatment for rheumatic conditions. In the context of rheumatoid arthritis, there is a notable decrease in joint pain and a reduction in inflammation shortly after administration, along with a mitigation of rheumatic fever. Moreover, this drug facilitates the excretion of uric acid, making it useful in the treatment of gout.

Pharmacokinetics: There is considerable variation in the bioavailability of sodium salicylate across different species, with the most effective absorption observed in pigs and dogs, while horses exhibit comparatively inferior absorption, and goats show minimal uptake. The plasma half-life differs among species: horses have a half-life of 1 hour, pigs 5.9 hours, dogs 8.6 hours, and goats 0.78 hours. The rates at which plasma proteins bind to sodium salicylate are as follows: horses range from 52%-57%, pigs from 64%-72%, goats from 58%-63%, dogs from 53%-70%, and cats from 54%-64%. Sodium salicylate is capable of being distributed throughout various tissues, and it can infiltrate the joint cavity, cerebrospinal fluid, and milk, also crossing the placental barrier with ease. Predominantly, it undergoes metabolism in the liver, resulting in metabolites such as salicylic acid, which, along with a portion of the unchanged drug, are eliminated via urine. The rate of excretion is influenced by the urinary pH; it is increased in alkaline urine but decreased in acidic urine.

[Drug Interaction]  The activity of prothrombin in the bloodstream may be diminished by sodium salicylate, thus its combination with anticoagulant drugs is not advisable.  Co-administration with sodium bicarbonate can lead to reduced absorption of this drug and an increased rate of excretion.

[Function and Use] Antipyretic and analgesic, for the treatment of rheumatism.

[Dosage and Administration] Intravenous injection: 100-300ml/time for horses and cattle; 20-50ml/time for sheep and pigs; 1-5ml/time for dogs.

[Adverse Reaction] (1) The application of this drug in high doses over an extended period may result in conditions like deafness and nephritis.

(2) The inhibition of prothrombin synthesis can lead to a propensity for bleeding while using this substance.

[Precautions] (1) This drug is strictly for intravenous use and should not extravasate from the blood vessels.

(2) In cases of poisoning in pigs, symptoms like vomiting and abdominal pain can be mitigated with the use of sodium bicarbonate.

(3) The use of this drug is prohibited in animals that exhibit bleeding tendencies, suffer from nephritis, or have acidosis.

[Withdrawal Period] It is not required.
