[Veterinary Drug Name]

Generic name: Compound Sulfadiazine Sodium Injection

Trade name: Yanqingxin

English name: Compound Sulfadiazine Sodium Injection

Pinyin: Fufang Huanganmidingna Zhusheye

[Main Ingredients] Sulfadiazine sodium and trimethoprim

[Description] This drug is of colorless to faint yellow transparent liquid.

[Pharmacological Action] This drug is categorized as a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic agent, showing efficacy against the majority of Gram-positive bacteria and a selection of Gram-negative bacteria, as well as being effective against coccidia and Toxoplasma gondii. Sulfadiazine targets dihydrofolate synthase, thereby interfering with the initial step of folate synthesis. Trimethoprim, classified as a bacteriostatic potentiator, impacts the second step of folate synthesis by selectively inhibiting the function of dihydrofolate reductase. Consequently, the combined use of these two agents results in a synergistic effect, leading to a dual blockade of bacterial folate metabolism and an increase in antibacterial potency. The efficacy of sulfonamide drugs can be counteracted by drugs that metabolize into para-aminobenzoic acid, such as procaine and butacaine. Additionally, purulent exudate and tissue decomposition products can supply the necessary materials for bacterial growth, leading to an antagonistic action with sulfonamide drugs.

[Drug Interaction] (1) Drugs with the para-aminobenzoyl group, such as procaine and butacaine, can generate para-aminobenzoic acid within the body. Yeast tablets, which contain para-aminobenzoic acid required for bacterial metabolism, can diminish the efficacy of this drug, thus their combined use is not recommended.

(2) Co-administration with diuretics like thiazides or furosemide may intensify renal toxicity.

(3) Sulfonamide drugs have the potential to displace highly protein-bound drugs, including methotrexate, prednisolone, thiazide diuretics, salicylates, probenecid, and phenytoin. Although the clinical implications of these interactions are not fully understood, it is essential to monitor for any enhanced effects of the displaced drugs.

        (4) The bioavailability of sulfonamide drugs may be decreased when taken with antacids.

[Function and Use] Sulfonamide antimicrobial drugs, for infections due to susceptible bacteria and Toxoplasma gondii.

[Dosage and Administration] Intramuscular injection: 0.20.3 ml/time per 1kg of body weight for livestock. Once or twice a day, administered for 2-3 consecutive days.

[Adverse Reaction] Acute reactions can manifest as hypersensitivity, while chronic manifestations include neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, hepatic damage, renal damage, and central nervous system toxicities. It tends to precipitate in urine, and the risk of crystalluria increases with chronic or high-dose use.

[Precautions] (1) This drug is prone to crystallization when exposed to acidic substances, hence it should not be diluted with a 5% glucose solution.

(2) In cases of long-term or high-dose therapy, it is advisable to also administer sodium bicarbonate and ensure the patient has access to plenty of water.

(3) Should allergic reactions or other serious adverse effects occur, the drug should be stopped immediately and symptomatic treatment provided.

[Withdrawal Period] 12 days for cattle and sheep, and 20 days for pigs; 48 hours for the weaning period.
