[Main Ingredients] Methenamine
[Description] This drug is of colorless transparent liquid.
[Pharmacological Action] In acidic solutions, methenamine can decompose to release formaldehyde and ammonia, exhibiting a bactericidal effect.
After oral administration, most of it is absorbed and excreted unchanged in the urine. In acidic urine, it slowly decomposes to release formaldehyde and exhibits a bactericidal action in the urinary tract.
[Drug Interaction] The use of urinary alkalinizing agents (such as sodium bicarbonate, thiazide diuretics, antacids containing calcium and magnesium) can reduce the effectiveness of methenamine. Acidifying agents can accelerate the release of formaldehyde, enhancing the bactericidal effect.
[Function and Use] Disinfectant and antiseptic, for the treatment of urinary tract infections.
[Dosage and Administration] Intravenous injection: 37.5-75 ml/time for horses and cattle; 12.5-25 ml/time for sheep and pigs; 1.25-5 ml/time for dogs.
[Adverse Reaction] It has an irritating effect on the gastrointestinal tract, and long-term use may result in difficulty urinating.
[Precautions] It is advisable to take ammonium chloride concurrently to acidify the urine.
[Withdrawal Period] It is not required.
