[Veterinary Drug Name]

Generic name: Sulfathiazole Sodium Injection

Trade name: Beitening

English name: Sulfathiazole Sodium Injection

Pinyin: Huang’an Saizuona Zhusheye

[Main Ingredients] Sulfathiazole sodium

[Description] This drug is of colorless to light yellow transparent liquid; it darkens upon exposure to light.

[Pharmacological Action] Pharmacodynamics: Sulfathiazole is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic agent effective against most Gram-positive bacteria and some Gram-negative bacteria. Pathogens that are more sensitive to sulfathiazole include Streptococcus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Salmonella, Corynebacterium pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus paragallinarum, and others. Commonly sensitive bacteria include Staphylococci, Proteus, Pasteurella, Clostridium perfringens, Pneumobacillus, Bacillus anthracis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and others.

The antimicrobial mechanism of sulfathiazole is to inhibit bacterial growth and reproduction by suppressing the synthesis of folic acid. Sulfathiazole has a chemical structure similar to para-aminobenzoic acid, allowing it to compete with para-aminobenzoic acid for binding to dihydrofolate synthetase, thereby preventing the synthesis of folic acid in sensitive bacteria and exerting its bacteriostatic effect. Higher animals can directly utilize exogenous folic acid, so their metabolism is not affected by sulfonamide drugs.

During the use of sulfathiazole, inadequate dosage or treatment duration can lead to the development of bacterial resistance, with Staphylococci being the most prone, followed by Escherichia coli and Streptococcus. Once bacteria develop resistance to sulfathiazole, they may exhibit varying degrees of cross-resistance to other sulfonamide drugs. However, no cross-resistance occurs between the bacteria and other types of antibacterial agents.

Pharmacokinetics: Sulfathiazole sodium is rapidly absorbed after intramuscular injection and is excreted quickly. It has a short elimination half life, making it difficult to maintain an effective blood drug concentration. It undergoes a high degree of acetylation in the body; therefore, it should be used in conjunction with an appropriate amount of sodium bicarbonate.

[Drug Interaction] (1) When used in combination with Trimethoprim (such as TMP), Sulfathiazole can produce a synergistic action.

(2) Certain drugs containing para-aminobenzoyl, such as procaine and tetracaine, can generate para-aminobenzoic acid in the body. Additionally, yeast tablets contain para-aminobenzoic acid required for bacterial metabolism. Concurrent use may reduce the efficacy of this drug.

(3) Co-administration with diuretics such as thiazide and furosemide may increase nephrotoxicity.

[Function and Use] Sulfonamide antibacterial agent, for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria.

[Dosage and Administration] Intravenous injection: 0.5-1ml/time per 1 kg of body weight for livestock, administered twice a day for 2-3 consecutive days.

[Adverse Reaction] There are two types of toxicity: acute and chronic.

(1) Acute toxicity: This often occurs during intravenous injection of its sodium salt when the injection is too rapid or the dosage is excessive. The main symptoms include nervous excitement, ataxia, muscle weakness, vomiting, coma, loss of appetite, and diarrhea. In cattle and goats, additional symptoms such as visual impairment and mydriasis may also be observed.

(2) Chronic toxicity: This is primarily caused by excessive dosage or prolonged use. The main symptoms include: Urinary system damage, with signs such as crystalluria, hematuria, and proteinuria. Inhibition of the gastrointestinal flora, leading to digestive system disorders and frequent enteritis in herbivores. Hematopoietic dysfunction, resulting in hemolytic anemia, prolonged clotting time, and capillary bleeding. Immune system inhibition in young livestock or poultry, along with bleeding and atrophy of immune organs.

[Precautions] (1) This drug may form crystals when exposed to acidic substances, so it is inappropriate to dilute it with 5% glucose solution.

(2) Long-term or high-dose use may lead to crystalluria. It is recommended to administer sodium bicarbonate concurrently and ensure the affected animals have access to plenty of water.

(3) If allergic reactions or other severe adverse reactions occur, it is recommended to discontinue the drug immediately and provide symptomatic treatment.

[Withdrawal Period] 28 days for livestock, 7 days for the weaning period, 7 days for the withdrawal period for eggs.
