[Veterinary Drug Name]
Generic name: Sodium Selenite and Vitamin E Injection
Trade name: Xiaoqiling
English name: Sodium Selenite and Vitamin E Injection
Pinyin: Yaxisuanna Weishengsu E Zhusheye
[Main Ingredients] Sodium selenite and Vitamin E
[Description] This drug is of milky white emulsion.
[Pharmacological Action] As a component of glutathione peroxidase, selenium can eliminate the intermediate products of lipid peroxidation free radicals in vivo, to prevent lipid peroxidation of biofilms and maintain the normal structure and function of cell membranes. Selenium also participates in the synthesis of coenzyme A and coenzyme Q, and plays an important role in the tricarboxylic acid cycle and electron transfer in vivo. Selenium exists in selenoproteins in the form of selenocysteine and selenomethionine. Selenoproteins exert their biological functions by affecting free radical metabolism, antioxidant function, immune function, reproductive function, cell apoptosis, and endocrine system of animals. Vitamin E can prevent the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids and other easily oxidized substances in vivo, to protect the integrity of cell membrane and maintain its normal function. In addition, vitamin E can also improve the resistance of animals to diseases and enhance their anti-stress ability. Vitamin E is mainly stored in the liver, but its storage is much less than that of vitamin A. Vitamin E is metabolized in the liver and excreted mainly through bile. Vitamin E stored in the liver is easily exhausted when vitamin E in the diet is deficient.
Nutritional muscle atrophy may occur in animals with selenium deficiency, which may initially be manifested as dyspnea, skeletal muscle stiffness, and white muscle disease in young animals. Nutritional liver necrosis may also occur in pigs with selenium deficiency. Selenium deficiency in adult animals increases the susceptibility to diseases, and female animals with selenium deficiency are prone to reproductive dysfunction. A variety of functional disorders may occur in animals lack vitamin E. The growing calves, lambs, and piglets may suffer from nutritional muscle atrophy. Its early symptoms were stiffness and reluctance to walk, and the gray white area of skeletal muscle degeneration and myocardial damage can be seen in the autopsy corpses.
[Drug Interaction] (1) Large doses of vitamin E can delay the therapeutic effect of anti-iron deficiency anemia drugs.
(2) If taken together with vitamin A, this drug can prevent the oxidation of vitamin A and enhance the effect of it.
(3) Liquid paraffin and neomycin can reduce the absorption of this drug.
[Function and Use] Vitamin and selenium supplement, for the treatment of white muscle disease of young animals.
[Dosage and Administration] Intramuscular injection: 5-8ml/time for foals and calves, 1-2ml/time for lambs and piglets.
[Adverse Reaction] Selenium is highly toxic. The minimum lethal dose of sodium selenite for a single oral administration for pigs is 17mg/kg. A single oral administration of 10mg sodium selenite for young lambs may cause mental depression, ataxia, dyspnea, frequent urination, cyanosis, pupil dilation, swelling, and death. Pathological damage includes edema, hyperemia, and necrosis, which can involve many systems.
[Precautions] (1) Intramuscular injection of this drug will cause local irritation.
(2) Selenium is highly toxic. Excessive intramuscular injection of it is prone to cause animal poisoning. The symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, respiratory depression, weakness, central depression, coma, and other symptoms. It can cause death in serious cases.
[Withdrawal Period] It is not required.
