[Veterinary Drug Name]

Generic name: Iron Dextran Injection

Trade name:

English name: Iron Dextran Injection

Pinyin: Youxuantanggan Tie Zhusheye

[Main Ingredients] Iron dextran

[Description] This drug is of dark brown colloidal solution.

[Pharmacological Action] Pharmacodynamics: Iron is a key component of hemoglobin and myoglobin. Hemoglobin serves as the primary oxygen carrier in red blood cells. Myoglobin in muscle cells acts as an oxygen storage site to meet the oxygen demands during muscle activity. Most enzymes and factors involved in the tricarboxylic acid cycle either contain iron or require its presence to function effectively. When iron-deficient animals receive iron supplementation, not only does hemoglobin synthesis accelerate, but symptoms related to tissue iron deficiency and reduced iron-enzyme activity also gradually improve. These improvements include corrections in growth delays, behavioral abnormalities, and insufficient physical strength.

Pharmacokinetics: Injectable iron preparations are absorbed more rapidly compared to oral administration. When iron dextran is administered intramuscularly, peak blood drug concentration is reached within 24-48 hours. Due to its large molecular size, it is initially absorbed through lymphatic vessels before entering the bloodstream, resulting in a gradual increase in blood drug concentration. Following intravenous or intramuscular administration and absorption into the blood circulation, Iron dextran is phagocytosed and broken down into iron and dextran by the mononuclear phagocyte system. Once absorbed, iron ions are oxidized to ferric ions by ceruloplasmin in the blood. These ions then bind to transferrin receptors and enter cells through pinocytosis, where they are utilized by hematopoietic cells. Additionally, iron can accumulate in the liver, spleen, bone marrow, and other components of the mononuclear phagocyte system in the form of ferritin or hemosiderin. The protein binding rate is notably high in hemoglobin, relatively low in myoglobin, enzymes, and iron transport proteins, and low in ferritin and hemosiderin.

[Function and Use] Antianaemic, for the treatment of the iron deficiency anemia in foals, calves, piglets, puppies and fur-bearing animals.

[Dosage and Administration] Intramuscular injection: 2-6ml/time for foals and calves; 1-2ml/time for piglets; 0.2-2ml/time for puppies; 0.5-2ml/time for foxes; 0.3-1ml/time for minks.

[Adverse Reaction] Piglets injected with iron preparation might occasionally be unstable to stand due to muscle weakness, which can lead to death in severe cases.

[Precautions] (1) This drug has relatively high toxicity, so the intramuscular injection dose should be strictly controlled.

(2) Intramuscular injection can cause local pain, so deep intramuscular injection should be applied.

(3) Injections in pigs older than 4 weeks of age can cause pigmentation of gluteal muscles.

(4) This drug needs to be protected from freezing and may precipitate if left for a long time.

(5) Iron salt can react with many chemicals or drugs, so it is inappropriate to be used together with other drugs at the same time or in combination.

[Withdrawal Period] It is not required.
