[Veterinary Drug Name]

Generic name: Albendazole Tablets

Trade name:

English name: Albendazole Tablets

Pinyin: Abendazuo Pian

[Main Ingredients] Albendazole

[Description] This drug is of off-white tablets.

[Pharmacological Action] Pharmacodynamics: Albendazole is a benzimidazole with broad-spectrum anthelmintic activity. Nematodes are sensitive to it, and it also has strong effects on cestodes and trematodes (but at higher doses), while ineffective against schistosomes. The mechanism of action primarily involves binding to nematode tubulin, thus inhibiting its polymerization into microtubules with α-tubulin. Besides, microtubules are fundamental structural units for many organelles and are essential for processes such as mitosis, protein assembly, and energy metabolism in cellular reproduction. Albendazole’s affinity for nematode tubulin is significantly higher than that for mammalian tubulin, and minimal toxicity to mammals can be caused. Therefore, this drug is not only effective against adult worms but also has strong effects on immature worms and larvae, as well as ovicidal properties.

Pharmacokinetics: Albendazole is a benzimidazole drug with good oral absorption. Cattle absorb 50% of the administered dose from the gastrointestinal tract. 47% of the metabolites of the orally administered dose can be recovered in the urine within 9 days. In sheep, due to rapid metabolism into albendazole sulfoxide (the main active metabolite for anthelmintic activity), the parent drug cannot be detected in the blood, or only briefly. In addition, 20 hours after administration, the metabolites albendazole sulfoxide and albendazole sulfone reach peak plasma concentrations. The elimination half-lives of the sulfoxide metabolite in cattle, sheep, pigs, rabbits, and chickens are 20.5, 7.7-9.0, 5.9, 4.1, and 4.3 hours respectively, while those of the sulfone metabolite are 11.6, 11.8, 9.2, 9.6, and 2.5 hours respectively. In addition to sulfoxide and sulfone, there are also hydroxylated, hydrolyzed, and conjugated products that are excreted via bile.

[Drug Interaction] The combination of albendazole and praziquantel can increase the blood concentration of the former.

[Function and Use] Anthelmintic, for the treatment of nematode, cestode, and trematode infections in livestock and poultry.
