[Veterinary Drug Name]

Generic name: Colistin Sulfate Premix

Trade name: Silekang

English name: Colistin Sulfate Premix

Pinyin: Liusuan Nianjunsu Yuhunji

[Main Ingredients] Colistin

[Description] This drug is of white or off-white powder or granules.

[Pharmacological Action] Pharmacodynamics: Colistin belongs to the polypeptide class of antibiotics and is a basic cationic surfactant. It exerts its bactericidal action by interacting with the phospholipids of bacterial cell membranes, penetrating the bacterial cell membrane, and disrupting its integrity. This disruption alters membrane permeability, leading to bacterial death. This drug exhibits potent antibacterial activity against aerobic bacteria, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus spp., Klebsiella spp., Pasteurella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella spp., and Shigella spp., all of which are Gram-negative bacteria. Gram-positive bacteria are generally insensitive to Colistin. There is complete cross-resistance between Colistin and Polymyxin B, but no cross-resistance with other antimicrobial agents.

Pharmacokinetics: This drug is minimally absorbed following oral administration but is rapidly absorbed via non-gastrointestinal routes. Once in the body, Colistin is quickly distributed to organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and skeletal muscles. However, it penetrates poorly into the cerebrospinal fluid, pleural cavity, joint cavity, and infection foci. It is primarily excreted through the kidneys.

[Drug Interaction]

(1) Colistin exhibits a synergistic effect when combined with bacitracin zinc in a ratio of 1:5.

(2) Co-administration with neuromuscular blockers, such as muscle relaxant and aminoglycosides, may cause muscle weakness and respiratory arrest.

(3) Colistin has a synergistic effect against Pseudomonas aeruginosa when used with chelating agents (e.g., EDTA) and cationic detergents, often applied in the treatment of localized infections.

(4) Co-administration with drugs potentially causing renal impairment may increase nephrotoxicity.

[Function and Use] Polypeptide antibiotic. For the treatment of intestinal infections in cattle, pigs, and chickens caused by sensitive Gram-negative bacteria.

[Dosage and Administration] On the basis of this drug. Mixed feeding: per 1000kg of fodders, 0.75-1kg for cattle, pigs, and chickens, administered for 3-5 consecutive days.

[Adverse Reaction] Animals tolerate Colistin well when administered orally or locally. Systemic use may lead to nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and neuromuscular blocking effects. The toxicity of Colistin is lower than that of Polymyxin B.

[Precautions]

(1) It is prohibited to be used for laying hens during the laying period.

(2) Overdosing may cause renal dysfunction.

(3) Due to minimal absorption following oral administration, this drug is not suitable for treating systemic infections.

[Withdrawal Period] 7 days for cattle, pigs, and chickens.
