[Description] This drug is of off-white to light yellow powder.
[Pharmacological Action] Pharmacodynamics: Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibacterial agent and its antibacterial spectrum is similar to that of kanamycin. It has a strong antibacterial action on most Gram-negative bacilli such as Escherichia coli, Proteus, salmonella, and pasteurella multocida, and is also relatively sensitive to Staphylococcus aureus. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Gram-positive bacteria (except for Staphylococcus aureus), rickettsia, anaerobes, and fungi are resistant to this drug.
Pharmacokinetics: When taken orally or administered locally, neomycin is rarely absorbed. Only 3% of the total amount is excreted in urine after oral administration and most of it is excreted in feces without any change. Absorption may be enhanced when the intestinal mucosa is inflamed or ulcerated. When administered by injection, it is quickly absorbed and its in-vivo process is similar to that of kanamycin.
[Drug Interaction] (1) When it is used with macrolide antibiotics, it is possible to treat mastitis caused by Gram-positive bacteria.
(2) When taken orally, it may affect the absorption of digitalis drugs, Vitamin A or Vitamin B12.
(3) When used with penicillins or cephalosporins, it has a synergistic action.
(4) The antibacterial action of this drug is enhanced in an alkaline environment. Its antibacterial effect is strengthened if it is used with alkaline drugs (e.g. sodium bicarbonate, aminophylline, etc.), but the toxicity also increases accordingly. When the pH value exceeds 8.4, the antibacterial action is weakened.
(5) Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, NH4+, K+ and other cation can inhibit the antibacterial activity of this drug.
(6) When this drug is used with cephalosporin, dextran, potent diuretics (e.g., furosemide, etc.), erythromycin and etc., its ototoxicity may be enhanced.
(7) skeletal muscle relaxants (e.g., Succinylcholine chloride, etc.) or other drugs with this effect can enhance the neuromuscular blockade action of this drug.
[Function and Use] Aminoglycoside antibiotic, mainly used for the treatment of gastrointestinal infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria to which poultry are sensitive.
[Dosage and Administration] On the basis of this drug. Mixed drinking: 0.15-0.23g per 1L of water for poultry, administered for 3-5 consecutive days.
[Adverse Reaction] Neomycin is the most toxic among aminoglycosides, but few toxic reactions have been observed when it is administered orally or locally.
[Precautions] (1) It is prohibited for layers in the laying period.
(2) When administered orally, this drug may affect the absorption of Vitamin A and Vitamin B12.
[Withdrawal Period] 5 days for chickens and 14 days for turkeys.
