[Main Ingredients] Thiamphenicol

[Description] This drug is of white powder.

[Pharmacological Action] Pharmacodynamics: Thiamphenico is an amide alcohol antimicrobial drug and exhibits a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, with a more pronounced effect on Gram-negative bacteria compared to Gram-positive bacteria. They are effective against most Enterobacteriaceae bacteria such as Salmonella typhi, Paratyphoid bacillus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella, as well as sensitive Gram-positive bacteria, including anthrax bacillus, streptococcus, Corynebacterium, pneumococcus, and staphylococcus. Besides, Chlamydia, Leptospira, and Rickettsia are also sensitive to this drug. It has a considerable effect on anaerobes such as Clostridium tetani and Actinomyces. However, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and fungi are not sensitive to it.

Pharmacokinetics: This drug is rapidly and completely absorbed when taken orally. After absorption, it is widely distributed in various tissues and primarily excreted in its original form through the urine. In cattle and sheep, the half-life is shorter than that of chloramphenicol, while in pigs, the half-life is 4.2 hours.

[Drug Interaction] (1) Macrolides and lincosamides have the same target site as this product, both binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome. When used together, they can produce an antagonistic action.

(2) When used in conjunction with β-lactams, the rapid bacteriostatic action of this drug can lead to an antagonistic action.

(3) This has an inhibitory effect on the liver microsomal drug metabolic enzymes, which can affect the metabolism of other drugs, increase the blood drug concentration, enhance the pharmacological effects or toxicity, such as significantly prolonging the anesthesia time of pentobarbital sodium.

[Function and Use] Amide alcohol antibiotics, for the treatment of bacterial infections in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts of livestock and poultry, as well as bacterial diseases in fish.

[Dosage and Administration] On the basis of this drug. Oral administration: 100-200mg/time per 1kg of body weight for livestock and poultry, twice a day, administered for 2-3 consecutive days. Mixed bait feeding: 50g per 150kg of body weight for fish, once a day, administered for 3-4 consecutive days.

[Adverse Reaction] (1) This drug possesses hematological properties. Although it does not cause aplastic anemia, the reversible erythropoiesis suppression it causes is more common than that caused by chloramphenicol.

(2) The drug is known for its potent immunosuppression actions, approximately 6 times stronger than that of chloramphenicol.

(3) Long-term oral administration may lead to gastrointestinal dysfunction and manifest as vitamin deficiencies or secondary infection symptoms.

(4) It exhibits embryotoxicity.

(5) The liver microsome drug metabolizing enzymes have an inhibitory effect, which can affect the metabolism of other drugs, increase the blood drug concentration, and enhance the efficacy or toxicity. For example, it can significantly prolong the anesthesia time of pentobarbital sodium.

[Precautions] (1) This drug cannot be used for poultry laying eggs for human consumption during the laying period.

(2) Vaccination or use in animals with severely compromised immune function is contraindicated.

(3) The drug should be used with caution for pregnant and lactating poultry.

(4) When treating animals with renal impairment, it is advisable to reduce the drug dosage or prolong the dosing schedule.

[Withdrawal Period] 28 days for livestock and poultry; 7 days for the weaning period; 500 degree-days for fish.
