[Veterinary Drug Name]
Generic name: Ciprofloxacin Lactate Soluble Powder
Trade name: Huanbingshu
English name: Ciprofloxacin Lactate Soluble Powder
Pinyin: Rusuan Huanbingshaxing Kerongxingfen
[Main Ingredients] Ciprofloxacin lactate
[Description] This drug is of white or faint yellow crystalline powder.
[Pharmacological Action] Pharmacodynamics: This drug is a broad-spectrum bactericidal agent specifically for animal use. It targets the bacterial DNA gyrase (gyrase A) subunit, thereby inhibiting bacterial DNA replication and transcription, which leads to its bactericidal action. The drug exhibits potent antimicrobial effects against a majority of Gram-negative bacteria and cocci, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella spp., Escherichia coli, Enterobacter spp., Campylobacter spp., Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., Aeromonas spp., Proteus spp., Haemophilus spp., Yersinia spp., Serratia spp., and Vibrio spp. Additionally, Brucella spp., Chlamydia trachomatis, Staphylococcus (encompassing penicillinase-producing and methicillin-resistant drug-resistance bacteria), Mycoplasma, and Mycobacterium show sensitivity to it. However, it demonstrates minimal antimicrobial activity against anaerobic bacteria and is ineffective for treating anaerobic bacterial infections. Compared to other drugs in its class, this drug is notably more effective against Gram-negative bacteria, with particularly strong in vitro antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Pharmacokinetics: Ciprofloxacin is rapidly absorbed after oral administration but incompletely, with its bioavailability lower than that of enrofloxacin. The oral bioavailability of enrofloxacin in dogs is twice that of ciprofloxacin. After oral administration of ciprofloxacin in foals, the bioavailability is only 2%–12%. In adult animals, the oral bioavailability is as follows: horses 10.5%, cattle 53%, pigs 40%, chickens 70%, and dogs 46%. The plasma protein binding rate of ciprofloxacin varies significantly among species, with 70% for cattle and 23% for pigs. It is primarily excreted unchanged in the urine. The oral half-life is 5.8 hours for horses, 2.4 hours for cattle, 2.5 hours for pigs, 9 hours for chickens, and 2.5 hours for dogs.
[Drug Interaction] ① Aminoglycosides and broad-spectrum penicillins, when co-administered with ciprofloxacin, exhibit a synergistic antibacterial action. ② Ciprofloxacin is susceptible to chelation with metal ions like Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe3+, and Al3+, which can impact its absorption. ③ The presence of ciprofloxacin can inhibit liver enzymes, resulting in decreased metabolism of other drugs (such as theophylline, caffeine), reduced clearance, increased blood concentrations, and potentially toxic symptoms. ④ Concurrent use of ciprofloxacin with probenecid can lead to an inhibition of its renal tubular excretion due to competition for the same transport mechanism, resulting in a prolonged half-life.
[Function and Use] Fluoroquinolone antibacterials, for the treatment of bacterial and mycoplasma infections in livestock and poultry.
[Dosage and Administration] On the basis of this drug. Mixed drinking: 2-4g per 1L of water, twice a day, administered for 3 consecutive days.
[Adverse Reaction] (1) Degeneration of cartilage in young animals, resulting in skeletal development issues and symptoms such as limping and pain, is observed.
(2) Digestive system reactions manifest as vomiting, decreased appetite, and diarrhea.
(3) Cutaneous reactions include redness, itching, hives, and photosensitivity.
[Precautions] (1) It has a potential excitatory effect on the central nervous system and may induce seizures. Dogs with epilepsy should use it with caution.
(2) It should be used with caution for carnivorous animals and those with compromised kidney function. Dosage adjustments are necessary for animals with severe kidney or liver disease to prevent drug accumulation.
